Welcome to Obstetrics & Gynaecology!
Obstetrics and Gynaecology involves the care of pregnant women, their unborn babies and the management of diseases specific to women. It is a combination of medicine and surgery so is the best of both worlds!
As most of the care of low-risk mothers and uncomplicated deliveries are performed excellently by Midwives, Obstetricians are only involved in around 35% of births. This is where with complex cases or if the baby becomes distressed during labour. Obstetricians can use instruments (forceps or ventouse) to assist delivery and also performing caesarean sections – the bread and butter surgery for all O&G trainees. Gynaecology involves further surgical procedures such as the surgical intervention of miscarriages, treatment of polyps, minimal access surgery for endometriosis and major gynaecological cancer surgery.
O&G is represented by the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.
